I was very disappointed as well. I have the book and expected much more.
The fact that "Thin Red Line" was released rougly in the same time as SPR is important. SPR and Spielberg had official Pentagon blessing.
Thin Red Line had not blessing at all, due to "gold teeth collection" scene.
IMHO Nick Noltes character was flabbergasting. From my experience in the army, types like portraied by Nolte have to be very careful because accidents can happen at any time.
I know that in the US ARMY such accident were called "fragging". From "fragmentation grenade" usually rolled into offensive officer individual trench or tent.
