It is hard for Westerners to understand that but it is a culturally and/or religiously ingrained belief. It isn't as though we don't view battlefield death a noble sacrifice, but we mourn each and every life as a tragic loss nevertheless. That is a big difference. I do believe that more modern societies in Asia, even probably Japan today, see it differently than they did at the time of World War II.
Now people who teach hatred to their children and encourage them to be martyrs by killing and maiming innocent civilians are a different story...
