The most compelling evidence against the incident having taken place is the absence of German propaganda photos of the sunk destroyer. I can't imagine Goebbels' people passing that up, and as you pointed out they had control of the harbor.

On the other hand, I find it a bit tough to believe that a panzer crew would allow a false claim of that magnitude to be made on their behalf. Especially with the full knowledge of their fellow tankers.

As we have discussed in the past, legitimate kill claims were almost scared to them.
