The Stalin Note

In 1952 there was a propose for German reunification by the Soviets, almost four decades before the actuall reunification would happend.

The propose was that both Germanies would be united as one state that would be neutral in the cold war (something in the line of Austria).

There was another proposal to restore a united Germany to it's 1937 borders if it's will join the Warsaw Alliance.

Of course it's might be just a trick by the Soviets to try and damage W. Germany alliance with the west, however I believe the Soviets could gain much from German unification:

1. There would assure that in the event of a war the German resources would be use by the west in the event of a war.

2. As it was the early 50es, most of the hardcore Wehrmacht/Waffen SS and most of Germany's generals veterans lived in W. Germany, of coure most of them as it's only was a couple of years since the war were qualify for military service, so no doubt in a future comfilct there could be a dreaded force.

And on the contrary all that the Soviets need to give up was E. Germany with it's small population and it's limited resources.
