Not sure if he really qualifies but General Percy Hobart deserves a special mention for the part he paid on the British and Commonwealth beaches on D-Day.
Britains answer to Guedarian (SP??), he was dismised into retirement in 1940 and joined the home guard as a Lance-Corporal. (General to Lance Jack, that's some demotion!!). Re-instated in 1941 and developed the 'Funnies' from the lessons learned from the Dieppe raid.
