That would be my guess. The normal charge in a shell wouldn't have enough forces to overpressure the gun tube unless you plugged the end of the barrel. |
According to the article in the book I have they were the result of "mishaps".
The story was mainly about things German troops were forbidden to photograph. Photographing damage such as this was considered a deterrent to moral and anyone caught faced serious charges. Obviously though, some still did.
