One other idea is this - our games group is going to be playing a D-Day type game on a large scale. It will involve models and action for a landing, paratroops, air attacks, blah blah blah.....
The table size is going to be 1.8m (6') x 3.6m (12') or maybe even 4.8m (16'). This will take us a fair while as we only play once a week.
My thought was too take pictures of this game and explain / show what is happening on certain moves. Members will then be invited to give a quick summary (after some thought) on what they think is the best way to go from the current situation. That way everyone can still learn what is going on (same rules as we are using now) without having to play in such a long game. You would be advisors to the high command of both sides if you like.
This would also leave everyone free to play other games as we are now but still have some ownership in what will be a large undertaking (setup is going to be a beast but wait till you see the pics).
The other thing that should be good is that no one will have to follow the whole thing. If you only have time for a look every few weeks you will still be able to put your thoughts in on the current move.

Yes, yes, yes! I'd love to see that here in the Game Forum.
