- A Japanese seaplane launched from a submarine drops bombs over forests in Oregon (USA)
- In New Guinea Pte Bruce Kingsbury becomes the first soldier to receive a Victoria Cross in Australian administered territory. He iis killed by a sniper whilst leading a charge, firing his Bren gun from the hip, which saves his Battalion HQ.
28 August 1943
Boris III, the pro-axis Tsar of Bulgaria is assassinated whilst returning to Sofia after a visit to Hitler
28 August 1945
- 150 American airborne trrops land at Atsuki airfield near Tokyo. The first allied troops to land on the Japanese mainland
- The battleship HMS Nelson anchors off Penang to take the Japanese surrender in Malaya
