What a history!

Good that he spoke all those languages! Seriously, that was not all that uncommon in central and Eastern Europe. Someone from Vilnius might have had a similar experience (Russian until 1918, Polish until 1939, Soviet 19th September 1939-10th October 1939, Lithuanian until 1940, Soviet until 1990, Lithuanian again 1990-present), and that's if you don't count it as Lithuanian from 1918-1920 (or "Central Lithuania" until 1922). Interesting history in that region as a result of the break up of three empires in the 20th century.
I also would like to read this book.
