In the Pacific, 15 US carriers begin a three week sweep of Japanese held islands between New Guinea and the Philippines including Iwo Jima, Mindanao and Luzon, destroying more than 1,000 aircraft and 150 ships at a cost of only 72 planes.
August 31 1945
Around 1,000 Allied POWs from camps in the Tokyo area are transferred to hospital ships offshore.
