"Breaking out of the camp" and escape attempts were duties of Allied officers of all nations. Even if escape to neutral country was nearly impossible, escape as such, tied up nazi man power and resources - it was a form of fighting.

These brave fellows also used escape preparations as sort of acivity which kept them alive and sane.

Why Gestapo shot them separately?
Why not? Just economical approach.
Prisoner is here, we torture him, then shoot him and cremate.
Why bother to use precious fuel, transport all captured fellows to one place?The end result is the same. They were shot and cremated as Adolf said...
