I've never even seen a dice tower let alone use one, but I have seen pictures of them. That seems to be one of the sanest solutions to dice rolls.
When on a table, I prefer to toss the dice is a box. It avoids the map board destruction factor and keeps the dice on the table. I once dropped a die under my gaming desk top and while retrieving it, I found a DEAD MOUSE next to my die. Yakk! I had been poisoning the little bastards and they were dying all over the place. The dead one inside my wall stunk for a week or so...
One of my preferred rolling solution is the FLOOR itself. I have some very LARGE dice and they roll nicely on the carpet. In college, I had a wood floor in my dorm room and we would make the R/A down stairs crazy by rolling the big dies on the floor above his room.
It's nice to have a wall or a corner to keep the dice under control when rolling on the floor so they don't end up under the furniture. The big dice are nice because it's easy for everyone to see the numbers.
Rolling in a box can lead to "not enough" action on the dice and sometimes the rolls can be in question as the dice "slide" rather then bounce. Also, the sides of the box can lead to "cocked dice" which is also bogus.
Anyway, when playing "gentlemans" rules, it doesn't matter much how the dice get rolled, but in tournament play, things can get "dicey".
