Sounds like one of those 'agents' that changes the surface tension of the paint...a drop of Windex or dishwashing liquid works as well. Vigorous stirring can cause a troublesome froth though.

Yeah it is something like that but the effect is different to Windex et al. I use Windex in washes to make paint spread well and it works brilliantly. The Pledge does the opposite by pulling paint down and into creases etc, as it was designed to do with cracks and cuts on vinyl floors.
It is amazing what can be done with stuff you can get from the supermarket for relatively low prices isn't it? Windex, Pledge, Hairspray, swizzle sticks.....
