Re: what have you been watching

Just bought a DVD of "Is Paris Burning?"-a B&W film from 1966. Reminds me of the "Longest Day"-has an all star cast with most of the characters being only on screen for a minute or two. It's somewhat slow at first, concentrating on the political infighting between the various Resistance groups over how and when they would rise up against the Germans. The last hour is the best part of the film which depicts the Liberation. The most moving scene concerns "Georges" a tank commander who talks with his wife over the phone and tells her he's coming home after 4 years, only to die in a duel with a German AT gun in front of his home. This isn't some sentimental fluff made up by some screenwriter but actually happened-terribly sad. On the down side, the "Panthers" would be more beliveable if they used someting bigger than an M24 Chaffee for the mock up-they're just too small. Not the best WW2 film, but certainly not the worst-good viewing for a rainy day.
