Just started something a little offbeat-"And If I Perish" about US Army nurses in the ETO. Sad to say these ladies weren't accorded the same respect as male officers even though they wore rank insignia on their uniforms-seems like they were purely ornamental. Also understand that they were denied membership in veteran organizations postwar as they weren't considered veterans. That's funny as I know a number of them were killed at Anzio's "Hell's Half Acre". If memory serves me right there was no "rear area" at Anzio-guess the vets of 3rd ID, 45th ID, !st SSF etc just made that one up. If being under fire doesn't make you a veteran-what does? Let's hear it for the ladies!
