VOLGOGRAD, September 24 (Itar-Tass) - Over a dozen of rounds of ammunition from the time of the Battle of Stalingrad were found on Sunday at the 30th kilometer of the Volgograd-Moscow federal highway, Itar-Tass learnt at the Volgograd branch of the Ministry for Emergencies.
Information on finding the dangerous objects was received by rescuers from road-building workers who were engaged in excavation work to widen the highway.
According to the ministry’s specialists, artillery shells in rotten crates are likely part of a former field munitions depot or a temporary burial place of ammunition, which was forgotten after the end of the war. It was decided to inspect thoroughly all the surrounding area. The place with shells is now guarded by police till the arrival of army engineers.
Residents of the Volgograd Region have found 19 air bombs and more than 2,000 other rounds of ammunition from the time of the Battle of Stalingrad since the start of this year.
