The eyes are painted very last.

I have noticed that most model builders out there just paint the eyes white and add a iris/pupil to them.

IMO they often seem 'Popeyed' or 'Bugeyed' because they forget eyes are also lined around their outside by eye lashes (more visible on people with dark hair and fairer skin tones.) and darker creases in the folds of the eyelids skin.

And they paint them too big and round.
For instance when you squint, smile or laugh for example, your eyelids close up closer to each other and very little white is actually visible and the eyes appear more like dark slits.
