Re: Greetings from a former USA MP Staff Sergeant
Greetings, Klaus; my greatgrandfather and his family migrated from Damme in the area of Oldenburg in northern Germany. They arrived in Baltimore in the 1870s and settled in Cincinnati, OH. I grew up with my Dad's father speaking German. My mother's side of the family (Springer) came from Stuttgart. I took four years of high school German, then attended our Defense Language Institute at Presidio of Monterey, California twice. I didn't BEGIN to learn German, however, until I started working with Zoll and BGS on the border. What a wonderful experience! Our unit (Border Operations Detachment, 42d MP Group-Customs) had field offices all along the German border; I even managed to get into Austria once or twice!
