Former POW Medical Records
I was asked assistance by the daughter of a deceased WWII former POW in Germany. Records show he was wounded while taken captive during the Battle of the Bulge or during captivity.
While processing the paperwork for the request for posthumous award of the Purple Heart, and POW medals I discovered his military records were "lost or destroyed" in the fire at St. Louis.
Records show individual was repatriated and transferred to Wakeman General Hospital, Camp Atterbury, Indiana as a patient for 79 days. He received separation papers 1 September 1945 that states Certificate of disability for discharge.
The facility closed July 1946, and patients were transferred to Percy Jones Hospital, Battle Creek, Michigan.
I have contacted both areas to attempt to track the medical records to no avail.
Would appreciate any assistance to locate the records.
