My opinion, this is a move by Putin (yeah I know but...) to re-establish the Russian military prowess both to impress his possible admirers (and nationals) and to deter any offer of NATO membership to the southern provinces.
I believe this is going to be another "psst ant" conflict we were so used to during the Cold War. The difference with the modern world is petroleum. The area has a major pipe-line for the area. If Russia gains control, (through a puppet gov.) they can threaten many of their old republics. Give me 3 weeks, and I can be a genius on this. Hindsight etc.

And here we have what I think is the closest version of what it's about. Seems like the timing is no coincidence either with the world more interested in the Olympics.
As I understand it, Georgia itself has been pro-Moscow except for South Ossetia and Abkhazia which are the two provinces where things kicked off. It seems a little odd to me that a country the size of my back yard would knowingly start a war with Russia...what hope would they have?
Peace.

No, its the other way round, Georgia is pro western and the two disputed regions are pro Russia with a majority Russian population. Anybody know where North Ossetia is?
Georgia tried to join Nato but was rejected otherwise the EU and US/Canada would now be at war with Russia, something they managed to avoid for 60 years, makes you think eh?
I'm not sure how controlling the oil pipe line would bring other former soviet provinces into line, it is a major supply for EU oil, it would scare the crap out of them. However, my guess is that this is what it is all about, scare the EU and Nato, Russia seems to be seeing how far it can push things.
