Goering was a bona fide war hero in Germany during WW1 he had 22 aerial victories and wore the Pour le Merite, he was also the last commander of Jasta 11 the famed "von Richtofen Geschwader" although he tried to break away from Richtofen tradition by painting his plane all white.
