So, no more guesses? If you still want to figure it
out, you will want to stop reading now. Remember,
I told you guys I lived in Colo. & and there isn’t enough
oxygen here to think metaphorically :-)
The answer I was looking for was the German climb
of Mt. Elbrus, the highest peak in Europe at 18,000`+.
I believe I’ve seen books saying the climb was
21 August 1942, although the sites below have
22 Aug & 23 Aug:
WWII Axis Military History Day-by-Day: August
World War 2 Timelines 1939-1945 - Eastern Europe 1942 - Worldwar-2.net
At any rate, it was a one-time propaganda stunt,
there was no military reason to permanently
occupy the top of Mt. Elbrus.
The following site is a Video of German Mt.
troops in the Caucasians:
YouTube - In the Caucasus
Note that I’m 98% sure this is the highest German
ground forces got in WWII by climbing a mountain.
In the same sense, I believe the Italian “Height
of conquest” was Jan. ’43 when POWs escaped
to climb the 2nd highest peak in Africa, Mt. Kenya
(~ 17,000’ – see my review of “No picnic on
Mt. Kenya”).
How about the Japanese “Height of conquest”?
(This is one I don’t have a clue on).
If anyone knows of incidents that break the Italy
& German records above, or a Japanese record,
I would appreciate hearing of it.
