Re: Who was better?

He said not to hold it to him. There are stories in the Internet you wouldn't believe (or better should not). I too remember to have read a story that he was nearly captured but was wasn't identified as German because of all the dust all over him. This was during the Afrika campaign of course.

But to my knowledge he wasn't captured. That would have made a nice movie tough.

I read it too. Not on the Internet but it was 30 cents paperback which
I bought in second hand book shop, perhaps 18 years ago.
Edited in New York in 50's.
The plot was that two German soldiers were caught by New Zealanders and interrogated told them that they were employed in supplying and maintaining Rommel's secret headquarter in some oasis. Kiwis mounted operation, sort of the SAS raid, but Rommel slipped away.

I would love to find this "book" but last summer a few boxes of this kind of literature went to charity...
I'm sure that this was it. Total fiction but readable, like Sven Hassel

Cheers,

Re: Who was better?

Thats the problem today. It is hard to differ between fiction and the truth. "Someone heard...", "Someone said..." and "Someone read in the Internet..." Suddenly it is truth.

You "hear" it a few places and it is truth.

Re: Who was better?

Anyway, Montgomery only won El Alamein because he had more men and material. If it had been the other way round Monty would have his a** kicked.

Re: Who was better?

Material and man-power are essential in a war. If outnumbering makes one a better strategist is questionable indeed.

Re: Who was better?

@515: As we said: We've read similar articles. And we can't exactly remember where. Thats the trouble with these kind of stories...

So? Bradley failed to take St Lo when he was supposed to as well. Does that mean he was rubbish too?
