I wonder if Churchill would've forced Monty to advance on Rommel if he had pulled back. Both sides had sat for months building up and Britain needed a victory.

One battle that decided the campaign.
Churchill badgered Monty about this for some time but was told it would happen when 8th army was ready and not before. He got the message.

It is right about both Patton and Rommel being similar types. When either came up against well thought out defences they suffered. As already stated, Patton in Lorraine (as well as once in Tunisia) - Rommel at El Alamein and at the first siege of Tobruk.

Salutations All

I'll add my tuppence worth here.

I would say both Generals were excellent commanders without peer and both had their espective quirks, but many forget one aspect and that is Field Marshal Montgomery never had faced a two front war in North Africa, after Operation Torch Generalfeldmarschal Erwin Rommel did and held his own for a long time.

Then when the Normandy Landings took place and a beachead was established Germany was now fighting a three front war, Generalfeldmarschal Eriwn Rommel did the best he could with the situation, by this stage Germany was doomed.

Regards

Rommel.
It would take too long to write all the reasons why I prefer him over Montgomery. So, I will just say look at history.. Montgomery was good, but Rommel was better.

History might prove you wrong. When they fought, Monty came out on top.
