Getting back home

A SAS patrol in the Western Desert in 1942 was caught in the open by a pair of German fighter aircraft. Quickly taking cover the SAS soldiers could only watch helplessly as two of their three Jeeps were destroyed. Finally the enemy aircraft departed and the SAS men crept back to inspect the damage to their last vehicle. It was not good news. The vehicle's radiator had been seriously holed by several bullets.

With ingenuity the soldiers managed to patch up the holes using plastic explosive (luckily it didn't explode when the vehicle was restarted). They then took it in turns to urinate into the radiator every fifteen minutes. By so doing they made it back ninety miles across the Desert to their hidden base.

Re: Getting back home

Amazing how often urine enters survival stories!

It's supposed to aid chilblains.

If need be, you can drink someone else's, but don't drink your own. It will kill you.

It's not a survival story, but a second cousin was once a young lieutenant in the US Army. While on maneuvers in the winter, some men of his platoon started a fire. Naturally, he gravitated that way for heat.
The company commander came over and chewed him out for violating light discipline.

"Platoon, attention! Present c*cks! Ready, piss! Recover!"

Fire out, problem solved...

Slightly off topic. I hope Jim doesn't get pissed at me!

Re: Getting back home

Barrett, the two campaigns started around the same time, both around summer 1940. Germany gave up on Operation Sea Lion in Oct 1940, which was before North Africa campaign was won by the Allies, but it does not take away the fact that the British and Commonwealth men were winning engagements large and small in the Desert War at the same time RAF fighters engaged German aircraft above Britain.

I think the subject line of this thread is more or less a figure of speech, not an exact science. I don't think it can be an exact science as people still can't decide when was the exact starting date of WW2

Re: Getting back home

Actually I was referring to ground battles if I recall correctly in my thinking.

Sorry for the misunderstanding.
