The Grumman Family of Fighting Cats

F4F Wildcat



With a Pratt&Whitney R-1830-86 engine that boasted thrust of 1,180 HP 880 kW, The F4F Wildcat could reach a max. speed of 318 mph 512 km/h with an initial climb rate 1,920 ft/min 585 m/min. Ceiling was 34,780 ft 10,600 m and Maximum range of 1,274 miles 2,050 km.

Wildcat on the wing


A single seat fighter, the Wildcat had a wingspan 38 ft 11.58 m, length 28.74 ft 8.76 m, height 9.22 ft 2.81 m and a wingarea 260 sq ft 24.15 sq m. Weight empty was 5,760 lb 2,612 kg max. 7,952 lb 3,607 kg.
Armament 6x 12.7mm machine gun; 2x 113 kg bombs.
First deployed in 1940 7815 were built.



F6F-5 Hellcat


Powered by a Pratt&Whitney R-2800-10W engine with 2,173 HP 1,620kW thrust, the Hellcat had a max. speed of 380 mph 611 km/h with an initial climb rate of 3,250 ft/min 990 m/min and a ceiling 37,400 ft 11,400 m. Maximum range was 1,305 miles 2,100 km.


Hellcat, claws retracted


The Hellcat had a wingspan 42.8 ft 13.06 m, length 33.6 ft 10.24 m, height 13.1 ft 3.99 m and wingarea of 334 sq ft 31.03 sq m. Empty, the Hellcat weighed 9,154 lb 4,152 kg, with a fully load weight of 14,205 lb 6,443 kg.
Armament 2x 20 mm cannons, 4x 12.7mm machine gun (400 rounds each), 6x rockets and 2x 454 kg bombs.
The Hellcat was deployed in 1942 with 12,275 produced.

F7F Tigercat


The F7F Tigercat was Grumman's twin engine, single seater fighter. With a power plant of two Pratt&Whitney R-2800-22W engines and a thrust of 2x 2,072 HP 2x 1,545 kW, the Tigercat had a max. speed of 427 mph 687 km/h with a ceiling of 36,090 ft 11,000 m and a maximum range of 1,790 miles 2,880 km.

With a wingspan 51.5 ft 15.7 m, length 45.4 ft 13.85 m, height 16.6 ft 5.06 m and wingarea of 455 sq ft 42.27 sq m, The Tigercat's empty weight averaged 15,957 lb 7,238 kg and 23,656 lb 10,730 kg fully loaded.
Armament 4x 20 mm cannon, 4x 12.7 mm machine gun 300 rounds each), 2x 454 kg bombs or 6x rockets. Alternative under fuselage 1x 21inch torpedo. Only 250 were built from the time it was first deployed in 1944 to war's end.

F8F Bearcat-1B


A late entry into the war, The F8F Bearcat 1B was powered by a single Pratt&Whitney R-2800-34W engine with thrust to 2,100 HP 1,566 kW 5,873 kg, Max. speed of 421 mph 678 km/h and a ceiling of 38,714 ft 11,800 m and maximum range 1,964 miles 3,160 km.

The Bearcat's wingspan was 35.8 ft 10.92 m, length 28.25 ft 8.61 m, height 13.8 ft 4.22 m with a wingarea of 244 sq ft 22.67 sq m. Weight empty was 7,070 lb 3,207 kg with maximum weight fully loaded of 12,950 lb.
Armament 4x 20mm cannon, 2x 454kg bombs.
Although not deployed until 1945, 1,266 Bearcats were produced.
