Re: Messerschmitt Bf 109

My mother (seriously) taught me that only 'those' people said 'ta'.
The captured 'F' in the older photo is fascinating. The Allied roundels (South African Air Force I'm assuming) are a different thing to encounter. The 'X' in the other pic is a great illustration to a discussion in one of the other threads somewhere (sorry, I forget which) about the failure of museums to get it right. Our equivalent to your 'War Museum' is referred to as 'The War Memorial' and is in Canberra. I've been there three times and have never seen this, but in a book about Luftwaffe aircraft that I have, there is a photo of an Me 163 Komet that is captioned as belonging to said 'Memorial'. The paint job looks like it was applied by somebody who's only exposure to WW2 is from comics.
Peace.

Re: Messerschmitt Bf 109

Oh, oops! "Thanks", then!

You can see the SAAF roundels better on my pic of the Mk IX Spitfire. As to the museums, I have noticed they often struggle to get paint schemes right, especially on foreign aircraft. I think this 109 is more a case of various bits and pieces being put together, and then not finding the right cockpit hood.

Cheers,
Chris

Understood. I totally aknowledge that often, they would be limited by availability of bits n' pieces.
Don't misunderstand me mate...the 'ta' thing was entirely my Mum's baggage.
Peace.

Re: Messerschmitt Bf 109

Hi!

Also from the SA National Museum of Military History (the "War Musuem") in Johannesburg, this Bf 109 E was shot down over England during the Battle of Britain. It was brought out to South Africa on a fundraising tour, and ended up with the War Museum. It does seem they couldn't make up their minds as to which unit it belonged to, though!

Re: Messerschmitt Bf 109

Perhaps it's the faded paint but this one has the air of authenticity.

Re: Messerschmitt Bf 109

It's authentic alright. Bit broken, but hey, that's war, right?

Cheers,
Chris

Re: Messerschmitt Bf 109

Hi,

I reckoned I'd put up this unusual pic. It's a Bf 109E in Hungary, probably at Ferihegy airfield in 1944, but I can't swear to that. It is a fact that these yellow-nosed 109s were used as trainers for a while by the Royal Hungarian Air Force.

Photo courtesy of the late Lajos Jónás, RHAF.

Cheers,
Chris

Re: Messerschmitt Bf 109

Sorry, no idea actually. I've been looking more at the Hungarian side of the Bf 109s. I'll put up a few of them, but first want permission from the pic owners. Courtesy like.

Cheers,
Chris

Re: Messerschmitt Bf 109

Roger that mate...totally understood.
That shield with the sword under the cockpit is prety familiar to me...I may have the number wrong though...my computer is a long way from my library.
Peace.
