Re: Focke-Wulf Fw 190
Hi,
I gather they did some research on the camo, but I'm not sure of the rest. I can't claim any expertise on the markings, maybe someone will inform us? The foreground pic is the wrecked 109, and the background is, as you say a two-seat Me 262, which I gather is the only one still extant. I'll put a pic of that up in a wee bit. They're very proud of it, incidentally. Cheers, Chris |

Re: Focke-Wulf Fw 190
Look forward to the 262 pics. From the visible paint, it looks like the two seat night fighter version. Off the top of my head, I'm wondering if it's 'Red 12'. I know 'Red 12' saw limited combat and also survived the war...perhaps it ended up in South Africa. As far as I know, the only surviving A7V (German tank) from WW1 ended up here somewhere.
Peace.

Re: Focke-Wulf Fw 190
Everything about the 190A6 is as accurate as they could make it, i guess. The radar R6 mod was for autoranging/firing 210mm mortars but the R8 MK108 mod is installed underwing instead with no evidence of the mortar tubes having been installed. When the aircraft was captured it was in the configuration, markings and paint scheme displayed, according to the museum. Between the MK108s and the radar this had to be a real disappointment in the air . . .
The radar couldn't serve any purpose other than ranging, no altitude or azimuth capability. This configuration makes no sense . . . maybe . . . someone HIGH up . . . a GENIUS, perhaps, ordered it? lol The 262 is Red 8. Last edited by Randy; September 10th, 2008 at 05:50 PM. |

Re: Focke-Wulf Fw 190
the FW pictured was an experimental test A/C used by JG 11. In the spring of 1944 I./JG 11 already had a tried and true Fw 190A-7/MK which had the inner 2cm and also outboard 3cm Mk 108 in the wings, the standard for the deadly A-8/R2 and R8 variants to come into play with the 3 noted Sturmgruppen during the summer of 1944.
