Re: P-51 Mustang

In a lineup... If they were the car, it'd be like walking into the parking lot at school.... (middle class redneck thing, its like a Ford Dealership blew up back home... even in the Marines 'Stangs are a common sight, they are a bit cheap )

Love the stain the exhaust and bits of oil have made along the shiny aluminum..

Cool pictures.

All the Mustangs in the photos are Mid-Late Production P-51D's.

They can be identified by the addition of a 'Dorsal Fin' on the tail.
The Dorsal Fin was introduced to the Mid-Late D model Mustangs to correct the directional stability problems the earlier D's had.

Re: P-51 Mustang

Notice how the guy in the P-51 "moonbeam..." made the effort at wearing the right flight gear??? The guy in "Petie..." didnt give a rats ass, and it shows by spoiling the vintage appeal of the shot...destroys the illusion of 1944 that the first P51 has!...

Owners.....

Re: P-51 Mustang

Hi all you Mustang experts!

I am trying to help a South African family find closure on a loved one, who went down in a SAAF Mustang Mark III (P-51C) in 1945 over Yugoslavia. There seems to be some concern about the changes made to the Mark III, including a larger fuel tank. This was thought to cause "directional instability". How true is this, and did any changes, such as adding the bubble canopy for the Mark V (P-51D) seriously affect the Mustang's performance?

Thanks in advance for the help,
Cheerio,
Chris
