Stranger Than Fiction Aircraft

Blackburn F3, 1934
Lower wing bi-plane

This night-fighter project featured a stressed alloy frame, fabric wings and a steam cooled Rolls Royce Goshawk engine. The "stalk" below the cockpit housed the radiator. When prolonged taxi trials cracked the fuselage and revealed a dangerously high center of gravity, the project was abandoned.

Kalinin K-12 (BS-2) Zhar Ptitsa (Firebird)

Bizarre camo scheme aside, this scale prototype for the K-13 bomber flew pretty well despite having no tail. What did this plane in was not its design but designer. Development was abandoned after Russian aeronautics engineer Kalinin was shot for having "radical ideas".

Wow! What a camo job. Looks like a darn'd fish. Great imagination. I don't think I've ever seen such detail.

That's one of the fun/frustrating things about some of these photos you find posted elsewhere. They have either little info of wrong info. I like posting them because most times others can fill in the blanks.

I have no clue as to why they developed the prototype, or why they scraped it.

It looks to be a little too complicated, too much 'stuff ' involved in producing it. Too much to go wrong etc. And most likely...$$$$$$$$$$ probably not very feasible. (in my opinion)

I'm having trouble imagining those tracks moving fast enough to reach V1...
