The story that's been floatin' 'round on the B17G that have the missfortune to be at the wrong place at the wrong moment is that it was able to return to base but I've heard that it did in fact crash n' that's reasonable considerin how much the height loss is in between the frames.

Some of the loss of height may be attributed to the loss of weight in the aircraft that dropped the bombs causing it to gain height. If the loss of that tailplane was the only damage, it's perfectly reasonable to expect that the aircraft might survive.
