Re: Hallowed Ground

Some of these pictures were set up. I can't find it, but theres one of a soldier lying next to a rock with his rifle leaning on it. The rifle was found near by and the body was actually dragged up form a different location. Amazing what some people do just a picutre.

Yep, Treve you're correct. If fact one of the most famous I believe is this one...

Dead confederate shapshooter at Gettysburg

I'm not sure about the back story to this photo though. Perhaps Matt or Cross Of Iron can help out with the details.

I have no idea about this specific picture but Trever is right. Many of the photos of the dead were set up. Whether it be in the Rose Woods one which seems to be a collection point for a temporary grave yard. You can tell because many of them have flipped out pockets and none have belts or cartridge boxes. Plus the guy in the fore ground is partially covered by a blanket. Matthew Brady and other photographers set up some of their casualty photos. Often they dragged a body or two to a position that saw some fighting and set it up to be as dramatic as possible.

Quote:
Many photographers, it is said, would position the bodies in the fashion that they saw would fit the need of capturing the realistic qualities of death. Alex Gardener (One of Brady's Assistants) is said to have carried a dead soldier over a course of 40 yards so he could prop his body against a specific spot at the Devil's Den, presumably to capture the essence of a single, dead sharpshooter. In response to the allegation that Gardener had manipulated the scene to help portray the sadness, he responded; "The artist, in passing over the scene of the previous days' engagements, found in a lonely place the covert of a rebel sharpshooter, and photographed the scene presented..."
