The American Civil War was the first industrial war. And the failure of the European military to realize the impications of an industrial war led to the slaughter that took place during WWI. It always been my understanding that WWII was a continuation of WWI. with a 21 year break.

Agreed Jim! The ACW was also where weapons and tactics were born that went to maturity in other conflicts. Iron clad warships, aerial observation (ballons), a successful submarine and troops transported by rail to the battle lines, just to name a few.
