American Service Awards

The combat Infantry Badge (CIB) .This award was unique in that the recipient had to have engaged in combat against an armed enemy. The requirement of combat against an armed enemy meant just that, general officers and officers above Regimental Colonel were not entitled to receive the medal
There were/are basically three requirements for award of the CIB. The soldier must be an infantryman satisfactorily performing infantry duties, must be assigned to an infantry unit during such time as the unit is engaged in active ground combat, and must actively participate in such ground combat. Campaign or battle credit alone is not sufficient for award of the CIB."

Re: American Service Awards

Dallas! I'm sorry if my post was somewhat misleading mate! It's not my own personal campaign medal, it's from my collection! Much as I would like to say I won it in Afghanistan helping to crush the Taliban, alas, that would be completely untrue! I am posting some photos of my American medal collection - sorry for the confusion but your sentiment is appreciated! While my countries contribution in manpower is small by America's levels, we are the largest non-NATO combat force in Afghanistan, and we just had another fatality last week, one of our commandos was KIA there. Our new Prime Minister, Kevin Rudd, was recently at the latest NATO meeting in Europe, attempting to drum up support from the NATO family for more combat troops in the campaign.

Paul,

That last part is not true as far as I can tell. All forty-some-odd men of I/506 who were killed out right on D-Day received posthumous CIB's even though none of them saw any action. The closest one to seeing action was Cpl. Stanley Zebrosky who was killed in an ambush. This may have been an exception for Normandy but I don't think so...two men in the unit who didn't make the jump (I assume they were in the unit and not temp transfers) didn't receive medals until the Holland jump. This may be a mistake because Myron Ranney, part of the Sobel Mutiny, was already transfered back to E/506 by the time of the Normandy jump yet is listed as part of I/506.

When you say general officers do you mean Generals?

Matt

Re: American Service Awards

This is a reproduction of an American made Paratrooper Jumpwings (not mine). The Jumpwings were the mark of the US Paratrooper. Designed by Capt. William C. Yarborough, who also designed the jump suit and the rest of the paratrooper badges, in a contest in early 1941. He made at least a dozen different sketches before final picking this design, a parachute descending between outstretched wings. They were made by both British and American producers once Sobel opened the Chilton Foliat jump school. Most of the wings had a hatch clasp (like a safety pin) on the back but I was seen a few on line with clutch clasp (like a tie pin).

That's what a general officer is. The term applies to Admirals (though more commonly called "flag officers" which can also be used for Generals) and "Air Officers" as well.

Loosely, officers are categorized as junior officers (O-1, O-2, and O-3 in the US), senior officers (O-4, O-5, O-6), and general or flag officers (O-7 and above).

Re: American Service Awards

Alright thats what I thought but when he said general officers and officers above Regt Commander I second guessed myself because that is repetitive.
