Bomber Command Campaign Medal

A great article by Max Hastings supporting the call for the remaining members of Bomber Command to get their own medal. The article echoes my views almost to the letter!

Re: Bomber Command Campaign Medal

i cant understand why 'They' never were awarded an individual medal ?

surely they should have been recognised for the heroic acts and bravery shown by each and every one. The loss of so many Bomber Command aircrews signifies this wasnt just a glitch on the radar. This was a turning point in WWII, and one that should be recognised and put right. Today.....

Re: Bomber Command Campaign Medal

I totally agree, but I can see a wee stumbling block here.
Most people associate Bomber Command with Lancasters flying in to Germany etc. Any kind of Campaign medal would also have to include the other branches of BC i.e. SEAC and 205 Group, the latter which technically came under Bomber Command but has been largely forgotten about. The SEAC while a seperate command should really be brought under the same arm as BC for any kind of campaign medal.
The bombers of Coastal Command should also be given special recognition, the Atlantic medal doesn't really cover the work that was done by the sub hunters and ASR flights.

Post Re: Bomber Command Campaign Medal

i couldnt agree more....

whenever we watch commemoration of the services on tv ( especially around Rememberance day ) we always see a vast array of Lancasters, Blenheims, Stirlings, Manchesters going out each night on bombing missions... etc etc i could go on forever. Why 'All' these men never received a medal for their heroism is way beyond me ?

The present day is filled with being 'politically correct' - where people are afraid to say anything incase it offends someone. I would say that it is highly offensive for the British Media to recognise all the various factions of Bomber Command yet the British Government does nothing at all to Reward the honour of these men by issuing them with a Special Medal....

These men deserve both recognition and reward.... it would be offensive not to.....
