Yes, it was. If that's the case he was really in a dangerous place for a photographer. No wonder so many were killed. Of course Capa was killed by a land mine himself in Vietnam in 1954.

The other picture was taken from the very same spot so I suspect that the soldier got hit while Capa winded forward the next frame.

You are correct McCoy. I've seen the other photo also. Looking at that pool of blood I'd guess he didn't die right off.

My memory is a little off. I found 'em but sadly the size ain't much to cheer for.

There's two photos that show the moments before the assistant gunner gets killed by the sniper in Leipzig April 18, 1945.
