Re: Fire & Ice-Winter Warfare
The following grouping of photographs are of the Italian retreat from Russia in the winter of 1942-43...
![]() ![]() Eye witness accounts of the exodus say men cried and the tears froze to their faces... ![]() ![]() It said that along the sides of the route taken by the Italians, barely a meter could be found that was not strewn with discarded arms, equipment and the bodies of those who died along the way... ![]() By some estimates, the Italians suffered 85,000 casualties during the retreat

The only Airborne unit I know of that was in the Alps, with any time for R&R, was the 101st. The 82nd was in Berlin and according to a site I use on WW2 Airborne the 17th was near the Rhine and the 13th was in Reserve somewhere further towards France. It would have been between mid-May and the End of July. This doesn't make any sense...they wouldn't be wearing winter camo/bed sheets any more...no need, or the lined fur coats with hoods. Also it was only snowy near the tops of mountains. Another picture in the series, later page of a site I found it on, has the same church/barn steeple building in the background and labels it as US Army Ski Troops. Some posted thinking it was the 10th Mountain Division in Vosgi, France Winter of 44-45.
