Wow, these guys seem well dressed for the cold compared to most German troops. Great pic!

Re: Fire & Ice-Winter Warfare

The following grouping of photographs are of the Italian retreat from Russia in the winter of 1942-43...

Eye witness accounts of the exodus say men cried and the tears froze to their faces...

It said that along the sides of the route taken by the Italians, barely a meter could be found that was not strewn with discarded arms, equipment and the bodies of those who died along the way...

By some estimates, the Italians suffered 85,000 casualties during the retreat

Paul,

The only Airborne unit I know of that was in the Alps, with any time for R&R, was the 101st. The 82nd was in Berlin and according to a site I use on WW2 Airborne the 17th was near the Rhine and the 13th was in Reserve somewhere further towards France. It would have been between mid-May and the End of July. This doesn't make any sense...they wouldn't be wearing winter camo/bed sheets any more...no need, or the lined fur coats with hoods. Also it was only snowy near the tops of mountains.

Another picture in the series, later page of a site I found it on, has the same church/barn steeple building in the background and labels it as US Army Ski Troops. Some posted thinking it was the 10th Mountain Division in Vosgi, France Winter of 44-45.
