Paul,

The only Airborne unit I know of that was in the Alps, with any time for R&R, was the 101st. The 82nd was in Berlin and according to a site I use on WW2 Airborne the 17th was near the Rhine and the 13th was in Reserve somewhere further towards France. It would have been between mid-May and the End of July. This doesn't make any sense...they wouldn't be wearing winter camo/bed sheets any more...no need, or the lined fur coats with hoods. Also it was only snowy near the tops of mountains.

Another picture in the series, later page of a site I found it on, has the same church/barn steeple building in the background and labels it as US Army Ski Troops. Some posted thinking it was the 10th Mountain Division in Vosgi, France Winter of 44-45.
Matt, I'll re-check the site where I found this for further info, but it did say U.S. Airborne. The Alps is a large range, might not have been Germany or Austria where this photo was taken. Although it sure looks it.

And I just now looked. The Photo is originally slugged "usparaalps".

Did you get it from the WW2 in Color site? (which ironically has more B&W pics than color ones) A ton of it's photos are mislabeled. This is definately part of the group that is the tenth mountain div. Same church building thing, same fuzzy jackets. And they are armed which the Paratroopers wouldn't have needed because the war was already over when they got there.

Let me check the OP slugs and get back to you Matt. That may have been the place and you're right about mislabels there. I've seen more then a few winners on the German stuff. Some great pics there though.

Re: Fire & Ice-Winter Warfare

It appears that my photo recognition software (grey type) is still working now that I can access my library and check my memory.

A cropped version of this photo (in color as well, but not the whole shot as it misses the leftmost tank!) is on the back cover of the book "Battle of the Bulge, Hitler's Ardennes Offensive, 1944-1945" by Danny S. Parker.

The caption reads:
"M4A1 Shermans of the 40th Tank Battalion, 7th Armored Division pictured near St. Vith, Belgium, January, 1945."

I suspect this information is pretty reliable as he is a reputable author and it's a very well presented book.

If it is the 10th Mountain Division it would have to be Italy -- they never
got to France. Ironically, although threre were a huge amount of PR for
the "ski troops" (the 10th Mountain) when they trained, I believe they
only made a small handful of actual ski patrols in combat.
