Re: Sailors in action
McCoy,
Depthcharges........ good old fashioned depthcharges.... excellent bits of kit, provided you knew what you were doing when first installing the primer charge. The det depth was set by a simple spring pressure, to a corresponding depth you thought the submarine was at. Have worked with a slightly updated version of these.

Re: Sailors in action
Hi Wustenfuchs,
As far as I remember (or at least the ones I've worked with), they didn't have a dedicated timer as such, it was more depth (pressure) related to overcome the fuze spring tension, coupled with a form of clockspring if you like which slowly unwind as a fail safe det if the pressure didn't activate it. When discharged direct from the ship (before my time) they were fired in a spread, as it was the shock wave which did the damage and so didn't have to be to precise. As to what type of ship it is...... haven't a clue.

Re: Sailors in action
That's interesting! A (somewhat finicky device I imagine) main pressure sensitive spring that is depth related but a failsafe (timed) backup system. Brings the V1 to mind, as I think it had a pressure (impact) sensitive main trigger but also had a back up timer.
Would water temp affect the setting of the depth charge? A depth charge dropped off the Orkney's had to behave differently from one dropped off Cuba.

Re: Sailors in action
Brin, a simple language lapse from my side when I wrote it earlier. It didn't feel right at all but my brain was in freeze mode plus the fact that the Swedish word for deptcharge is "Sjunkbomb" n' that translates direct to "Sinkbomb". So it didn't feel right at all but I didn't see it.
This ones on me Paul!
