Matt is correct Hal, those are flares. Any never shy from questioning anything in a photo. If its in the photo, its fair game for the thread.

I'd like to take this opportunity to point out that "Gulaschkanone" (singular) does not mean "field kitchen." It translates literally as Goulash Cannon, being a nickname for a field kitchen.

For other such useful tidbits, start setting aside your pennies, pfennigs, and kröner for my forthcoming glossary of WWII German words, phrases, abbreviations, and miscellaneous little bits of trivia...
