I just found this picture of my father (on the left). I have no idea where this photo was taken or who is on the right side of the frame. He was in the Field Artillery, so the fact he is wearing a "Mae West", they are on a shoreline and looking at the expanse of the water in the background, makes me think they have just completed or were embarking on a crossing. As he landed at Utalh Beach, possibly the English Channel? Not sure what else to think.
I can't imagine he would have been wearing a PFD on the Queen Elizabeth enroute to Scotland or the Victory ship coming home. In that case, whether this would have been on the coast of England or Normandy could only be a guess, but my hunch is Normandy. The complete absence of any craft on the water is puzzling too, as it would seem either place associated with a crossing in August, 1944, even D+ 59, would have had more activity. Oh well, it will probably remain a mystery.
