World War Two Magazine Heros
My name is Charlie Peal and my father was Nolan Peal , Staff Sergeant in Co. G, 141st Inf. ,36th division. When I was young I remember seeing a page out of a magazine that featured the exploits of four military men. The one featuring my dad referred to the action for which he later received the Silver Star and the Purple Heart. This took place in Italy. It was a full page and divided between the 4 men and I have no idea which magazine featured these things. I am hoping that there may be someone out there who could direct me to that magazine. I think that this feature was in each issue. If I can find out which magazine it was I can try to get a copy to share with my brothers and sisters as well as numerous nieces and nephews.Any help or direction will be gratefully appreciated. Part of the writing referred to him falling back to his boyhood training and was shooting from the hip with a carbine which is supposed to be held to the shoulder and aimed but Peal handled it like an old pearl handled six-shooter.He knocked off three Germans. The writing quoted was from a dispatch by Don Whitehead with the Fifth Army in Italy delayed December 21. and was in the Corpus Christi Paper of Dec.23, 1943. At least part of Mr. Whitehead's article was at the bottom of the previously mentioned picture. Thanks , Charlie Peal

Re: World War Two Magazine Heros
Hi Charlie and
to the site.A dumb question but have you looked through Don Whitehead's writings in Combat Reporter: Don Whitehead's World War II Diary And Memoirs and Beachhead Don: Reporting The War From the European Theater, 1942-1945? Those may help give you some direction.

Re: World War Two Magazine Heros
Jim , I confess that I did not and really was not aware of the titles. I was going by memory and an old newspaper clipping. Thanks and I will give this a shot.
Regards and Thanks, Charlie P. |
