David Glantz is the foremost Western historian of the Soviet-German War of 1941-1945. This book was published after the collapse of the Soviet Union and relied heavily on the authors' access to Soviet documents previously out of reach of Western (and Soviet) historians. As a result this is the first book written primarily from the Soviet point of view and many historical misconceptions are corrected and addressed. Great attention is paid to the organization of the Red Army and its force structures.

The text was more than detailed enough for this reader and the maps were excellent. Battles are described in good detail and tactics are analyzed fairly thoroughly. Throughout the book comparisons are made between opposing forces and their strategies and thought processes.

The book is heavily footnoted with both source information and further details. Additionally there are several detailed tables in an Appendix summarizing personnel losses and combat strengths on both sides, as well as Soviet weapons production.

Overall an excellent read that belongs on the shelf of anyone interested in this conflict.
