Re: Review: Goodbye Transylvania
I am glad you liked the book. My father is one of the group of men that Mr. Landau writes about - Egon Makkay. As one of the "losing side" in WWII, I know that it's difficult for him some times to receive acknowledgement for his efforts during the war as people sometimes are quick to point out that he fought for the wrong side as if that alone makes him a bad person. Mr. Landau's book taught me a lot about the history of the people in that area, their feelings about entering the war, and things like that, things that you don't always bother asking your own parents because that's "old, boring stuff" when you are growing up. My mother told me some stories about what the Russians did during and after the war, awful stuff that people just don't know about unless you are a history buff I guess. The book opened my eyes in several ways.
