Lightbulb Kursk, a future battle in ASL to consider in the future....

I'm thinking that a Kursk game would be very interesting to play, from the German side as well as the Russian side.

Maybe playing a couple more games each for the German side AND from the Russian side. BUT maybe we can have two opposing teams at some point, and/or take the surviving units from those games into Kursk into each perspective army with a skill upgrade as well as weapons!!

Now I'm thinking of trying to do the lesser known battles of Kursk, the new Panthers that ran into the minefield, the Ferdinand and their battle and some kind of breakthrough mission for the German cats against the Russian AT belts. We could also add that fatefull town there as well on the surviving forces, if there are any after these.

We will (mike, Shannon and other maybe....) may have to modify the game somewhat to fit some of the elements in, so hopefully that can be done here at some point. Lets say 4 Panther D's and some infrantry support, 4 Ferdinands and some support and finally something like 5 Tigers only as the advance spearhead to might be some interesting battles.

Cheers, thoughts gentlemen? This is a longterm goal here, but I am open to anything to get this kind of "flavor" here for some ASl games, or maybe even some other game that would work as well to!!

That's a pretty big battle! Those tanks would be hard to kill. Need to give the Russians some IL-2s.

To bust an AT belt one needs to either sit back at long range and pummel away with the 88's beyond the effect range of the AT guns, or lay down a heavy smoke barrage right in front of the AT gun line and then get in close with the infantry and over run the AT positions.

I'm sure the SS troops would be up to the task!

I've read some books on how they did it for the AT belts, but I am most interested in the Panther Ds and Ferdinand battles, now that I hav'nt seen hardly any info on....... Just that the Panthers broke down and ran into a minefield, the Ferfies had some success, but many were also put out of action by mines, breakdowns and close infrantry assault with no German infrantry support. That firing small arms down the barrel of their gun sounds pretty crazy there to get those Russian ground troops off their backs!!

Cheers, it can be done if we get some linked battles involved in this one, Mike, your thoughts please??

We would need some historical background to design the scenario's/campaign from. Would also need OOB's, units involved (for the storyline), etc.

Would this be team vs team or another SASL type game?

As an assault on a static position, this lends itself nicely to SASL. You could bias the random unit rolls to include more AT guns and start the Russians off with some known AT guns, pill boxes, wire, mines and trenches. Random planes and artillery as well, would make it nasty for the Germans and not much moving around for the Russian side.

I'll have to review the Tank SASL mod that some guys wrote up a awhile back and see how it looks. Then I'll check the missions and see what come close to matching a scenario like this.

Post Re: Kursk, a future battle in ASL to consider in the future....

I would say you would have to "modify" the map and the units for each battle, but for now an all Armour game for ASL would be ideal so we can get used to playing their rules and quirks, then through in the mines and AT assets. There were also German planes in the air for Kursk remember.

So for those interested, would you guys like to have the Panther D, Ferdinand or the Tiger to play with if we get this started at some point?

Mike, I was thinking about teams here, but we can do SASL here to and see what happens. I think though that you are well enough along now that you can craft a tailor made battle, units and map maybe........??

Cheers, looking forward to your reply here, and if there is'nt that much interest, we can do just a couple people per side or one side only to!! So it would be a lot quicker for each turn to have ALL the orders in by as well, say two turns a week maybe? Ha Ha!!
