Well, might have been from smoke and such but definitely combat grim.
These guys have just been in a fight.
Dust from a march would have wiped from around the face from time to time and soft cover would have been swapped for helmets on a summer march.
Plus, these guys are wearing the gun harnesses. Those were used to jockey the gun from firing position to firing position in the field, but never as a way to tow a gun on a march.
