It's amazing to me that sometimes I see a picture of Russian peasants and the picture will look as though it could have been taken a hundred years earlier than it was. That whole 'timelessness' of the farming life. Then I see another that reminds me that it was taken in the mid 20th century and more, maybe only twenty-five years before my birth. Some of the images are of modern stuff. As somebody said, 'contemporary'. The photo they meant looks a lot like some small parts of my town. Government housing estates.

This is what I always thought when I saw old footage and photos. It's like nothing had changed in centuries despite wars and revolutions. I suspect that little changed for those folks whether they be ruled by Czar or Commissar. For people so isolated by geography and weather, I wonder how much has changed even today.
