I always wondered why a column like that never just ran and dispersed. I don't see that many guards escorting and that column is huge.

Check through the thread Dan, there are a lot like that. My guess is this was early in the war when many of them preferred capture by the Germans than rule by Stalin.
Sad that it turned out the way it did for them.
