Re: Interactive Gaming, Anyone?

I'll see what we can come up with for you all to have a go at.

One other idea is this - our games group is going to be playing a D-Day type game on a large scale. It will involve models and action for a landing, paratroops, air attacks, blah blah blah.....

The table size is going to be 1.8m (6') x 3.6m (12') or maybe even 4.8m (16'). This will take us a fair while as we only play once a week.

My thought was too take pictures of this game and explain / show what is happening on certain moves. Members will then be invited to give a quick summary (after some thought) on what they think is the best way to go from the current situation. That way everyone can still learn what is going on (same rules as we are using now) without having to play in such a long game. You would be advisors to the high command of both sides if you like.

This would also leave everyone free to play other games as we are now but still have some ownership in what will be a large undertaking (setup is going to be a beast but wait till you see the pics).

The other thing that should be good is that no one will have to follow the whole thing. If you only have time for a look every few weeks you will still be able to put your thoughts in on the current move.

Re: Interactive Gaming, Anyone?

In answer to Magna's and TRDG's query.....The majority of the games here in the Game Forum must stay in the World War II realm, but we can throw in other era's as well. Just so long as WWII stays the predominant topic. So... WWI, Napoleonic, Roman, Civil War, what-have-you...all good. Also, Naval batles are perfectly fine, too, as well as Air, Commando, even hampster battles (preferably WWII, hee heeee). Even a game of RISK!

This Game Forum, if you notice on the title page, says "Other games too..."; so we have given it a bit of latitude on purpose. Again, the key here is that we want to keep WWII being the primary focus...but there is more to gaming than just WWII games. So let's have fun!

Yes, yes, yes! I'd love to see that here in the Game Forum.

Re: Interactive Gaming, Anyone?

It will be a few weeks before that game starts and then some of you will be able to say I told you so when us players make moves contrary to your suggestions and stuff it up.

It should be a good exercise though as it won't require too much work on anyones part. I will give a commentary on what is happening and we will see what ideas come up.

I don't mind sticking to WWII in the main either as most people know more about it. There is another level of WWII game coming along which will put players in the role of battalion commanders at the least. You will order companies to move / defend in certain formations and decide support as in other companies of tanks / infantry as well as artillery. The scale will be 3 models or stands = 1 company and about 10" to the kilometre. This one can be a bit scary as artillery and other units can be onboard and therefore vulnerable to flanking / air / artillery etc. Each unit has command and comms which can be lost as part of the combat calcs. The fog of war comes in too as unit reports can only come in for X number per move - you are a busy commander and just can't get to all of them at once and give orders too. The idea here is so some units may not be capable of carrying out your orders at a given time - just like the real thing. It stops us being omnipotent.

Now that does indeed sound interesting. And keep the ideas coming folks.

WWII should be ok as a predominant theme. There should be enough games to cover a wide variety of format (RPG, Naval, Air, etc). It will just be a matter of organizing, recruiting players and keep it (them) rolling along. We should aim to keep everyone involved but not string people out among too many ongoing games so that they get burned out. Keeping the game moving at the right pace is critical to keeping interest up.

Those are really important points. It would be good if players can give some kind of idea to a game organiser as to their level of interest (curious/wanted to have a go/won't sleep till the next move is available) and perhaps their own opinion on their current gaming level and experience.

It may then be easier to help people start out in beginners games and move on to more complex things when ready.

I think the simple solution to that would be:
  • Each player can inform the Game Master as to their Individual Level of Interest by PM or email...makes sense, as it's administrative in nature work, in the game organizing for that particular game.
  • But for the Gamers' Bios which highlight things like gaming experience, we can have a specific thread titled "Gamers' Bios", where each gamer can submit just one post, indicating their gaming biography, if they so choose. In this way, the gamer should always have the edit option on their screen (correct Jim?), of which they can go in and update their Bio accordingly. Please, no one do this just yet however...we're still feeling things out, and I need to maintain a modicum of conrol here! Lets just say I have evil plans afoot!!!
