Call of Duty: World at War

Call of Duty: World at War completely changes the rules of engagement by redefining WWII gaming and thrusting players into the final tension-filled, unforgiving battles against a new ferocious enemy in the most dangerous and suspenseful action ever seen.

Powered by Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare™ technology, Call of Duty: World at War brings an uncensored edge to combat, as soldiers face the most harrowing and climactic European and Pacific battles in which an enemy, who knows no surrender and no retreat, will fight to the last breath, unleashing an arsenal of lethal surprising tactics. Peril and danger lurk throughout the battlefield as players combat the unknown risk of the new chaos of battle.

From the remains of Russia and the ruins of Berlin, to the beach and jungles of the deadly Pacific Theater, the volatile action takes on added depth as players employ new features that previously were only available in multiplayer, including perks, rankings and online stats in up to four-player cooperative gameplay, and take advantage of the new infantry and vehicle-based weapons, like the potent flamethrower, that will set the battlefield ablaze.

The COD franchise has had me hook, line, and sinker since day one; so I'll be buying this one for sure.

Re: Call of Duty: World at War

I don't know if my PC can run the fourth episode.
The third was okay, but I found it very linear and unless one follows the prescribed route...everything stops. I understand it's hard to make it otherwise but that's my take on the series. Three and a half stars.
Peace.

Geek44, I am with ya. The COD series is indeed very linear...which can be frustrating, especially when compared to the more open-ended nature of some other shooters. On the other hand, it does allow the developers to really nail the pacing and program thrilling set-piece events. Definitely a trade off.

Here's my quick two-cent rant about the game (what I've gathered in a few hours of play)

In terms of gameplay, World at War feels a whole lot like COD4 - and I'm certainly not complaining. The COD4 engine still looks great, and the shooting and movement mechanics are excellent.
While still miles from a tactical shooter, it feels grittier than past iterations of the series - more blood, more dirt, and the destructible limbs.
Also of note, excellent pre-mission briefings with authentic interspersed photos and footage.

+1 on the "rant". The pre-mission briefings were exceptionally well done, with some nice 3-D viz "fly-ins" to the locations and tactical maps. I did notice some technical glitches here and there, with enemy soldiers getting hung up on objects or actually just standing between two of my squad mates; but overall a pretty enjoyable entry in the franchise, from a solo player standpoint. I'll probably try out the multi-player experience this weekend.
